UNIVERSITY OF THE AEGEAN

Situated at the eastern part of the Aegean archipelago, the Department of Marine Sciences (DMS) is the only university department in Greece that offers Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. degrees in Oceanography, while conducting international level research in various areas related to the marine environment, such as climate change, ecosystem functioning and health, marine biodiversity and conservation, fisheries, aquaculture and marine resources in general, as well as coastal zone problems such as coastal erosion and pollution.

The Campus is located approximately 4 km south of Mytilene, the capital city of Lesvos Island, and is easily accessible both from downtown and the Odysseas Elytis airport.

The University of the Aegean, re-established in 1984, it is one of the newest Universities in Greece, housing more than 15 Academic Departments. The central administration of the University is located in Mytilene Lesvos, while various Departments have been established in Chios, Samos, Rhodes, Syros, and Lemnos. Being dispersed over various islands, UoA constitutes a university-network covering all prefectures of the Aegean archipelago.

Mytilene International Airport (MJT), or Odysseas Elytis Airport, is the main airport on the island of Lesvos. It’s small, with just one terminal for domestic and international flights.

It is located on the island of Lesvos, 8 km south of Mytilene, in the area of Krateia. It receives daily flights from Athens and Thessaloniki, while in summer there are few charter flights from other Greek islands.

Taxi service is available at the Airport. TAXI stand is located in front of the Arrivals Terminal building. The taxi fare is based on a metered system, and confirming the fare with the driver before starting the journey is recommended.

Bus service is provided between the Airport and the city of Mytilene. The bus stop is located in front of the departures Terminal building. Bus schedules may vary depending on the season, so checking the timetable in advance is advisable. Tickets can be purchased from the bus driver.

Taxis in Mytilene

Mytilene has around 100 readily available taxis that make taxi transfers easily accessible to all travelers. Also, the fares are reasonable and regulated throughout the area. You can easily hail a cab in the street, call one of the many radio taxi companies, or simply walk to the main taxi rank at Lesviakis Anoiksis Street.

*Between 00.00 and 05.00 a double tariff applies to all rides within the city.

Public Transportation: Public buses directly connect the center of Mytilene with the University. Buses linking Mytilene to Odysseas Elytis Airport can also be used, although these specific routes usually do not go up the university hill, requiring an additional 5-minute walk.

By Car: The University is approximately a 10-minute drive from both Mytilene and Odysseas Elytis Airport. Car rental services are available in both areas.

On Foot: The University is about a 40-minute walk from the center of Mytilene. Special attention is required along the coastal road due to increased traffic, frequent strong winds, and the limited extent of the sidewalk.
