Discover the Cultural Heritage of Volos

As part of HydroMediT 2026, participants are invited to discover the cultural heritage of Volos and its connection with the sea through a visit to the exhibition “Evangelistria of Nea Ionia, Volos: A Century of History, Faith and Community” at the Volos City Museum.
Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Evangelistria parish, the exhibition explores the history of the church and its importance to the refugee community that settled in Nea Ionia following the events of 1922-1923. Around 12,000 Greek refugees from Ionia, Thrace and Pontus settled in the area, with the refugees from the island of Englezonisi in the Gulf of Smyrna, arriving in Volos via their own fishing boats.
Through archival documents, family photographs, personal stories, religious artefacts and historical objects, visitors will discover the traditions, memories and everyday lives of the people who shaped the community.
Following the exhibition visit, participants will also have the opportunity to explore one of the city’s landmarks, the Church of Evangelistria in Nea Ionia, Volos.
This cultural experience offers HydroMediT 2026 participants an opportunity to learn more about the history of Volos and the enduring connections between heritage, faith and coastal community.
